Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

I am going to do something a little different again and write about a movie that I have not seen yet. Now I do not think that this movie is going to be trash but I would like to get my ideas down about it before I go see it. I think that this is good feedback for the ape’s marketing team because it will explain why I want to go see this film and the things that I have imagined it will be by watching the trailers.

I am pumped up about seeing this movie this weekend for several reasons. First I like the original franchise and I like Charlton Heston. Secondly we already know how Planet of the Apes turns out and I have always wondered how we got to this place. So the big question is how much along the timeline of the original film is this film going to fall into or is this film just going to do it’s own thing by using the name of an established franchise and then do whatever they want? This second option would not be so good of an idea.

I suppose that to make this film the correct way we would need to use the timeline proposed in the first dialog scene with Charlton Heston. The first 15 minutes of the original sets the timeline and sets up the entire film and much of the franchise. Because of this this prequel-type film that has been released today would be taking place  many many years before the original this would leave a whole lot of story to cover. We have the questions as to why the world and humanity got so messed up, how the apes came to be, why human are so scarce, and why some apes are not entirely mean to humans while others hate them all needs to be thoroughly addressed. Maybe not all of these will be covered in this film and from the trailers it appears that this film will be covering the question as to how the apes came to be. Which really is the coolest of the questions that have been left unanswered.

So if I was making this film and I was given this script how would I do it? First off the whole idea with evil medical using apes for brain experiments is genius. Seeing Draco with what looks like could be ape crap on his face is also genius. (good job Tom Felton, the movie world needs more young questionable bad guys – really it does)  The trailer seems to imply that we will see the apes go from baby ape to full blown warrior smart apes within the film and I would not want to cover anything more than that while dishing out parts of their interaction with humans. More or less speaking to humans animal like deplorable behaviors.

But how would I end the film? I would end the film shortly after the apes start to talk. Why? well truth be told lots of helicopters with guns and the military would demolish a bunch of apes. Bombs would kill apes, guns would kill apes, people have killed apes for a long time and super apes would die in much the same fashion. Scientist and spaceman Charlton Heston could kill apes in their more advanced form which is far beyond what is being shown in the trailer so I seriously doubt that this film is going to be the end all for all the planet of the apes lore. I think that if done correctly this film could do well and could start a prequel type franchise as long as it does not try to over extend itself and cover too much with one film. If they choose to just cover the story of the apes from baby ape to talking super ape then that would be enough to satisfy me for now and would get me pumped up for the other unanswered questions.

Anyway I will be seeing this film tonight or tomorrow depending on how my day plays out. I will update something without spoilers and let you know if I pumped myself up only to be let down or if it was better than expected.

Here is a trailer for the film. It is the one from comic con so it is not the one that you have seen in the theaters.
