Female Demon Ohyaku (1968)

I was given a suggestion the other day and now need to watch “Female Demon Ohyaku” and the rest of the series…right now! However I cannot find it on streaming. I really want to get a review up for this so that I can write a battle review on “girls with crazy back tattoos – Ohyahu’s oni vs Lisbeth’s dragon” sometime before the American release of “the girl with the dragon tattoo”. If anyone knows where I can find this film streaming please drop me a note…I will send you a no-prize or something.

Ninjas vs Vampires (2010)

Tastes like trash is back at you with another streaming b-movie suggestion. Watch “Ninjas vs Vampires” on Netflix streaming over the weekend because when a movie is titled “Ninjas vs Vampires” you just have to watch it. Yes, this movie is a sequel to the 2008 film “Ninjas vs Zombies” ,which I have not found on streaming yet, so I cannot speak to the continuity. What we do have is an action comedy horror story about a guy who’s girlfriend gets attacked by vampires and saved by ninjas. He then tries to join the ranks of ninjas and battle the undead beside them. I am looking to watch the first film because this movie has sparked my interest. If a third film is made I would like to watch that as well.

Something that I have relearned from this film is that if you do not have a budget and you are going to make a film that action comedy horror is not a bad way to go because the genre can be pretty darn entertaining. If you happen to know some technical skills in adobe after effects you can make some cool glow effects, portals and explosions that can work well for you in a low budget production.

Here is to hoping that there is a “Ninjas vs Monsters in the near future”.

Chawu (2009) aka Chawz, aka Chaw

Chawu or as it is called on netflix streaming “Chawz” is a Korean dark horror comedy about a giant boar that eats people. I found the movie to be really entertaining, funny and if you have not guessed by now the story is very much in line with “Jaws” but on land and with a giant pig. I was impressed by this south-korean film and it is a b-movie creature feature worth checking out.

On a side note, Korea is really working hard at establishing their brand of cinema as “k-movies”, I am not buying into all that marketing nonsense for now because I find that most Asian cinema tends to be a hodgepodge of several Asian countries on many production teams. This mix up of Asian cultures and the inside jokes that they play on one another is one of the reasons that I enjoy Eastern cinema. Examples in this film would be calling all Americans as Europeans and you can not have a Korean film without poking fun at Chinese culture. Examples from outside of this film would be always having to have the zombies jump in a single file line with their arms out. Once you really start to dive into Eastern Cinema there are lots of jokes that you will start to pick up on that are based on social aspects and impacts of the country of origin.

The trailer is not entirely accurate in that it seems suspenseful when the movie is more comedy horror than on the edge of your seat suspense.

Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976)

I got a suggestion from a movie fan that one of those Italian b-movies “Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man” was on Netflix streaming. He said that the name of the movie alone should get me to watch it, so I did. What should have been said was “Live like a Cop, Die Like a Man” is on streaming and it is another one of those Italian films directed by Ruggero Deodato, aka the director of “Cannibal Holocaust”, that I know you are into.

What we have here is a crime movie about a pair of bad-ass cops that don’t ask questions and do not make arrests, they just kill the baddies on the spot. One memorable scene early in the film has the guys chasing a duo of purse snatchers on motorcycles. When the chase ends one of the two purse thieves is dead and the other is on the sidewalk with just about every bone in his body broken. What do the bad-ass cops do? Well one walks over and props the half dead guy up, waits a few seconds until he hears the sirens from the rest of the police force and then decides to break the perpetrator’s neck. I found this to be confusing and odd but it is par for the course on this film. Later in the film we find a female love interest for our bad-good-cops; her scenes are filled with innuendos and plays on 3-way sex with the boys. Now don’t think that I am spoiling the film all these happens in the first 10-15 minutes. One thing that I have taken away from this movie is that the Italians didn’t just make films; they made them over the top more violent, more sexual, and more socially line blurring of western social norms in cinema. You have to respect that. Being a person that grew up on the spaghetti westerns I never truly realized how different and violent the Clint Eastwood cowboy films were in comparison to the American made counterparts. “Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man” has caused me to revisit some of my movie roots and rethink some of my understandings of Italian cinema and violence in film.

Anyway, I can not find a trailer for this film anywhere. Again watch this entire b-movie on streaming on Netflix. For the readers that want to research this film based on the original Italian title check it is “Uomini si nasce poliziotti si muore” enjoy!

Assault Girls (2009)

Assault Girls is now streaming on Netflix. The film is about an mmorpg (massive multiplayer online role playing game) in which a party of total babes have to get a male slacker to join their team so that they can battle a giant sand worm.

The good: Babes, video games, cool special effects, screw the story let’s blow things up. The ending was visually very well done. If you play mmorpgs or are considering how you are going to make real life money playing Diablo 3 when it arrives then this maybe a movie that you would be into.

The bad: The English dialog is broken but not too painfully so. There are some real bad sleeper parts like the giant monologue at the start of the film that I had to watch 4 times before I stopped asking myself “what the heck did that guy just say?…rewind” And there are some shots that are way too painfully long, viewers do not need a 3 minute long shot of a person eating. When you get to these you will know what I am talking about.

Conclusion – I enjoyed this film and I am sure that a few of my single guy friends that spend too much time playing video games would also enjoy this one. What red blooded male does not want to watch a bunch of Asian babes play video games, talk trash and blow things up? It is no “Battle Royale (2000)” but this is a video game movie and those usually suck to begin with.
